9/11 – We Will Never Forget

In memory of 9/11, the following depicts my experience in New York City that dreadful day. The following may contain some material that is difficult to handle so If you feel you may take this hard, please do not read any further.

Five years ago, September 11, 2001, I was heading to work in New York City as I have done every single day. I remember thinking to myself what a beautiful day it was – there was not a cloud in the sky. So I got to work about 8:00, got my cup of coffee and sat down to check my email as usual. About 30 minutes later, someone came up to our office and said a plane just flew into the World Trade Center. my first thought was that a private plane was flying to low, lost control and accidentally clipped the World Trade Center.

All frantic, my co-workers and I ran outside to see what had happened. Directly down, about 20 blocks away, we could see the towers vividly and yes, a plane had hit directly into the top of the North tower. There were flames and thick black smoke everywhere. We could not believe our eyes. in that instant, I looked around me and never thought NYC would be in the state that it was at that moment. There was dead silence – traffic was completely stopped – everyone was outside of their cars – people were everywhere watching in disbelief. It’s like someone had flipped a switch and turned off the city.

After a while, people started talking and trying to figure out what had happened. Many were saying what I had thought – that a plane had accidentally flown into the tower because it was flying too low. well we were wrong. in the distance we saw another jet flying directly for the Towers. We could not believe our eyes – with a huge fireball, the jet flew directly into the South tower. at that moment, we all knew this was not an accident – this was War. Thousands of people around me were screaming and crying frantically wondering about their family and friends in the towers. It was a sight that I cannot get out of my mind to this day.

What were these people going through? how were they going to get out of the Towers? is this really happening? these were all the thoughts running through my head as we all watched in horror. People were saying look at all the debris falling out of the windows. Many of us knew that was not debris. It was people jumping to their deaths because they could not withstand the heat. I could not believe this was happing – these poor innocent people.

After watching for what seemed like hours, it had happened. The South Tower was collapsing. No way No way was this happening I didn’t think it could get any worse. It was like a huge part of me was taken away. how could the World Trade Center Tower collapse? It was one of the most advanced architectural structures in the world. well it did and with a huge puff of black smoke, covered the entire south side of the island with ash and debris. how many people were in there? is the North Tower going to collapse now too? these were all questions that were circling among everyone on the streets. I looked around and some of my fellow co-workers were crying. We tried to console each other but it was almost impossible to do. how could we make each other feel better when we were in the middle of a war zone?

Not long after, the North Tower had collapsed too. again, we just couldn’t believe what was happening. I tried to call my family and friends to try to get in touch with someone but the cell lines were completely flooded with calls so I couldn’t get through. So I decided to go upstairs to the office and try to email my mother to let her know I was ok. well the Internet was flooded too. I could not send or receive any emails. It was like our country was completely shut down. at that moment, I did not want to be in the city anymore. I wanted to get back to my home in New Jersey but how? how could I leave the city when were in a complete lockdown? All bridges, tunnels, subways and Path Stations were completely shut down. I thought I was going to have to sleep there until I heard someone in my office say that the NYC Ferry was taking people from the south side of Manhattan over to New Jersey and that this was the only way out. The problem was the ferry was directly near the World Trade Center.

Well I made the decision and decided to take the chance and walk down there to see if I can get out of the city. It took me nearly two hours to walk 20 blocks. As I was walking down, everyone was going in the opposite direction, looking at me like I was crazy for walking towards the destruction. I couldn’t help it; I wanted to get out of the city. As I got further down, closer to Ground Zero, I saw people setup stations in front of their apartments with water, towels, bandages and anything else they could think of. I stopped by a station to grab a t-shirt and some water to wet the shirt and place over my nose and mouth as it was difficult to breathe with all the dust that was in the air.

To make a long story short, I was able to pass through a couple of police barriers and finally made my way to the Ferry, and yes they were running to New Jersey – I was so relieved. So I got on the Ferry and took a ride back to New Jersey. As we got farther away from the island, it was a different sight than when I was in the city. when I was in the city, all I could see was smoke and dust in the air but when we were a little further away, I saw the devastation from a distance. I just couldn’t believe my eyes – it looked like the entire city was completely gone.

Well I made it safely back home and like everyone, watched the news for the next two days straight. five years later and it seems like it happened yesterday. I know many want to forget the events of 9/11. I myself find it difficult to hear about it every year and cannot imagine what the families of the victims are going through. I’m sure they just want to forget and move on. But in my mind we must also never forget. 9/11 is a day for remembrance – a day to remember those that were lost and a day to remember what these terrorists have done to us and will continue to do to us in the future.

Thank you to all the men and women who have and continue to serve and protect our country.

Pool, Fields Get Lightning Warning System

August 31, 2011 by

If you are at Verona Pool today and there’s a loud horn followed by a flashing light, get out of the water immediately: Verona’s new lightning warning system is sensing trouble nearby.

Late last week, Verona installed a saucer-shaped antenna on the roof of the main pool building designed to sense a lightning strike well before it can be spotted from the lifeguard’s chair. made by a company called Thor Guard, it senses changes in the electrostatic properties of the atmosphere that can predict a lightning strike. A similar antenna has also been installed on the roof of the Verona Community Center, to watch for lightning strikes at the current and future recreation fields on the western side of town. The system has been set to offer about 8 to 20 minutes of advance warning of lightning.

“I’m thrilled with it,” says Recreation Director Jim Cunningham of the Thor Guard system. “this has been on the wish list since I got here, but the idea has been in the community for years.”

Cunningham knows all too well the dangers of lightning strikes. when he was working in the West Orange recreation system a decade ago, lightning struck and killed a baseball player during a high school game. It was a cloudy day, but not one that seemed ripe for a lightning strike to a casual observer.

Thor Guard takes the decision making out of human hands. For most of the early years of the Verona Pool, we relied on human observation of lightning to whistle swimmers out of the pool, sometimes with close calls. more recently, Verona tracked weather radar over the computer. The Thor Guard system, which is in place at several area golf courses, including the Montclair Golf Club, Essex Fells Country Club and Crestmont County Club, uses technology to sense changes in the local atmosphere that can predict lightning strikes well before lightning is visible or thunder is heard.

If the Thor Guard system sees reason to predict a strike, a horn will sound and the location’s strobe light will begin to flash. when the danger of lightning has passed, there will be three horn blasts and the strobe lights will go off, which means we may be back in the water or on the field sooner. currently, the Verona Pool mandates 20 minutes out of the water after every clap of thunder.

According to Cunningham, the system cost about $20,000. If it works well at the first two locations, it may be extended to other locations, such as Everett Field or the public schools. Posters at the pool describe the system and what the public needs to do if lightning is predicted, and that’s not just getting out of the water. You’ve got to clear the cement deck and grass that surrounds the pool, and taking refuge in the gazebo is not an option. Cunningham wants you all the way inside the main pool building or, better yet, in your car with the windows rolled.

Says Cunningham: “we have another tool to enforce with the public that lightning is a danger and we should not take it lightly.”

March was a trying month for the famous dynamic duo of tennis, sisters Serena and Venus Williams. through the death of a beloved relative and injuries on the court, the queens of the court have held together and remained the depiction of a close, sisterly bond.

On March 23, Robert Maxfield, a member of the Crips gang, pleaded no contest in the 2003 shooting of the pros’ sister Yetunde Price. Price was sitting in a vehicle with her boyfriend when Maxfield took her life, allegedly believing the car encased members of a rival gang.

Physically, both had to side-step their love of the game due to injuries sustained on the court.
A ligament sprain forced Venus to withdraw from the Nasdaq 100 Open in Florida in late March, while Serena Williams bowed out of the Nasdaq Open in Miami due to a knee injury.

While times are tough, the sisters shouldn’t throw in the towel. the duo has become a single element for success. they have won 11 major single titles between them.

In 1999, they became the first sisters to win a Grand Slam crown together in the 20th century by winning the French Open doubles title; and by playing together in the finals of the 2001 US Open, the marked history in being the first sisters to have made it to the finals of a Grand Slam tournament. the sisters are no shadow in Hollywood’s limelight either. they filmed their reality show Venus and Serena: For Real in 2005.

Lake Tahoe – Fun Facts and Fun Things to Do

Considered as a year-round vacation resort, Lake Tahoe is home to over a dozen ski and snow boarding facilities, top-rated golf courses, and is the center of a myriad of other fun activities including hiking, boating, gaming, sightseeing and more. What’s more, the Lake of the Sky is a sought after wedding and honeymoon destination for adventurous couples looking to unite in matrimony. with all its grandeur in addition to its partiality towards satisfying enthralling interests and providing congenial opportunities, Lake Tahoe is truly a bravura getaway attraction for those in quest of a thrill-seeking weekend or simply planning a tranquil, all-encompassing vacation.

Lake Tahoe borders two states and is situated in Northern California and Nevada amidst the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range at an altitude of 6,225 feet above sea level. it is the second deepest lake in the United States having a maximum depth of 1,645 feet and is the third largest alpine lake in the world. Renowned for its natural beauty and adventurous attributes, Tahoe also has an enriching history of origin.

Historically, the belief was that the Lake Tahoe basin was of volcanic origin. however, the valid theory is that Tahoe’s basin was formed by faulting fractures in the earth’s crust. Faulting fractures cause blocks of earth to move up or down. the uplifting blocks are what created the Carson Range to the east of the lake, and the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the west. Downward moving blocks created the Lake Tahoe Basin that’s presently situated in-between these mammoth mountain ranges.

World-class ski resorts have been developed due to these earthly shifts, producing plenty of winter fun in Tahoe. seven of these world-class ski resorts that are quite popular include Mt. Rose, Northstar at Tahoe, Squaw Valley USA, Sierra at Tahoe, Alpine Meadows, Kirkwood, and Heavenly Ski Resort. Heavenly is an enormous draw for winter tourism as it is a well-known resort with 4,800 acres of ski terrain that spans across two states, California and Nevada.

Golfing is big in Tahoe in the summer months and early fall. Particularly notable as one of America’s top golf courses and host to a variety of major golf events including the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship, Edgewood Tahoe is a first-rate facility that is conveniently located on the south shore on the Nevada state line. Many well-known personalities have golfed on the extraordinary course of Edgewood.

Another popular Tahoe activity to partake in is hiking because there are a variety of trails around the lake leading to the most scenic views imaginable. Eagle Rock, for example, is a dormant volcano located on the west shore, and a 30 minute hike to the top reveals an awe-inspiring panoramic view of the rich blue waters of Lake Tahoe. in close proximity are the trails of Emerald Bay Falls. These are easily travelled paths leading to spectacular views of the falls and tri-colored bay. On the east shore is Spooner Lake, which consists of hiking trails that lead to striking views of the Eastern Sierras.

Boating, parasailing and water skiing are the aquatic summer sports that happen around the lake with boat launches conveniently located throughout. Zephyr Cove Resort on the Nevada side and the Ski Run Marina in California are two places on the south shore of Tahoe that provide skidoo and small paddleboat rentals for those who want to take part in this sort of summer fun.

Having an approximate diameter of twenty-two miles and a width of twelve, Lake Tahoe has a super long shoreline perimeter totaling seventy-two miles. This equates to loads of beaches for sun tanning or lounging, many of which are equipped with picnic tables, barbeque pits, playgrounds, and volleyball and tennis courts. Additionally, there are seasonal afternoon concerts at several beach locations about the lake to add to the summertime enjoyment.

Many times these same beach locations also serve as wedding venues throughout the year. Numerous amounts of engaged couples love the thrill of a lakeside wedding in the exciting town of Tahoe. Regan Beach is one such spot on the south shore where newlyweds-to-be unite in marriage and then undergo the honeymoon celebration with what Tahoe has to offer.

As you travel around the lake you’ll discover many of the small towns frequently hold craft fairs, which offer another form of summer and springtime fun. These fairs are typically composed of jewelry, gift items, modern artwork and an assortment of other items of interest. You’ll also find gaming casinos on the northern and southern shore of Tahoe if you’re interested in some fast-paced action. the casinos provide 24 hour entertainment including slot machines, table games, restaurants, outlandish nightclubs and nightly showroom performances.

Of course, this is not an all-inclusive list of the year-round fun in Tahoe, but it is a small glimpse of what to expect when you arrive. If your preference is a leisurely walk along the sandy beaches or a power hike up the steepest mountain peak, skiing the mogul slopes of Heavenly or playing 18 holes on the finest golf course around, you can bet it’s available at the Lake of the Sky. for the weekend thrill-seeker or laid-back vacationer alike, Lake Tahoe is a year-round, dazzling getaway that has it all.

Summers are really very hot, and people require some effective modes of cooling. thus, the demand of A/C in summers is the most. in order to install a window air conditioner in a room, there is a need to sacrifice one of the windows of the rooms for the fitting of the AC.

After the air conditioning system is installed, the individual gets immense relief from the heat and the humidity in summers. but, does one get the same cooling throughout the life? Window air conditioner is electrical equipment, and all electric equipments require some repair at any point of time to make them working for a long time and to increase the life duration of them.

So, in case your window air conditioner does not give proper cooling, it implies that there is a need to do provide proper servicing to the air conditioner. The ways to clean the window AC have been discussed below:

The front grill of the air conditioner is removed with the help of a puffy knife. Such a technique is applied if the grill is held with the help of clips. however, in case the grill has been screwed, a screwdriver is used to remove the grill.

Now the air conditioner is unplugged and taken out of the window and kept on a strong table. Take the help of someone else as the air conditioner is heavy.

The mesh filter is removed and washed.

The grill is washed in warm and soapy water. The grill is bleached to remove any kind of mold. Now shake the excess water out. The filter and the grill are set in the dish drain for letting them dry completely.

Take a vacuum having the brush attachment, and run it through the evaporator coils in a thorough manner.

Take a plastic scrub brush to remove any kind of firm dust.

Now, have a look at the fins on the coils. in case of any flattened or bent fins, run a fin comb to straighten the fins. The fin comb can be bought from any appliance store. make sure to be very gentle with the fins, as the fins are very delicate.

The air conditioner is now turned around. make sure that back of the air conditioner faces you. Here, the condenser coils are located.

The same process of running a vacuum brush and the plastic scrub brush to remove any kind of dirt is carried on these coils.

Here also the fins are viewed and straightened with the help of the fin comb.

Now just inspect the air conditioner from inside and get rid of any kind of dirt and dust with the help of the vacuum brush and the crevice attachment.

The blades of the fan should also be cleaned properly with the help of the vacuum and the brush attachment. .

The cleaning process is now complete and the air conditioner is now placed back into the cabinet of the window.

The filter and the grill are re-installed.

The air conditioner is now plugged in.

Now, the air conditioner is again ready to provide effective cooling. After performing the above listed steps of servicing of the window air conditioner, an individual would definitely feel an improvement in the cooling effect. It is actually very easy to service the window AC, and can be done at home only. Servicing the air conditioner at home saves a lot of money, thus ensuring proper cleaning. in order to ensure the effective functioning of the window air conditioner, it is advised to clean the filter of the AC monthly, while in working stage.

Mayor leads ‘warts and all’ theater tour

Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering talks about her childhood memories at the Highland Park Theater Friday. | Curtis Lehmkuhl~Sun-Times Media

Updated: August 13, 2011 9:04AM

With each step through the Highland Park Theatre, the scene shifts abruptly from a historic and timeless venue on the verge of a return to glory to an aging and costly relic of a bygone era.

Mayor Nancy Rotering rode that emotional roller coaster July 29 while leading the Highland Park News on a “lights on, warts and all” tour of the 85-year-old movie house.

Walking from room to room, floor by floor, Rotering shared glowing tales of childhood afternoons at the theatre, memories now reinforced by appreciation for the beautiful wood-carved details that encase the venue. her next observations, however, including torn seat covers, missing floor tiles, a water logged basement, crumbling crown molding and mounting operating losses, cloud the still-evolving picture.

The enigma that is the Highland Park Theatre is set to be the focal point of a city-directed restoration or redevelopment effort of 64,300-square-feet of prime Central Avenue real estate in downtown Highland Park. Purchased in 2009 for $2.1 million, the new City Council has agreed that its budget has no room for the movie business.

“It’s a tremendous space with great history,” Rotering said within a few steps of entering the main theatre. “Anybody of a certain age will remember first dates up in the balcony, or watching cartoons in the afternoons on weekends.

“That’s why there is an interest in preserving it.”

but that balcony is now closed — and has been for many years. Theatre managers explained that the top poses a safety hazard, worsened by the deteriorating plaster molding that wraps the projection room. the theatre seat upholstery remains in shockingly poor shape and the sound equipment is out-of-date, too.

“Those are two major pieces that would have to be resolved if this would continue as a theatre,” Rotering said, with theatre general manager Kevin Anderson in full agreement.

But before Rotering could exit the dramatic main theatre, which once boasted 1,200 seats, she again pointed out the detailed wood carvings and mural-covered walls that can’t be matched by new stadium multiplexes.

The tour continued into the remaining three theatres, the old-fashioned reel spindle projection room, 1980s-era offices, modest bathrooms and two attached retail storefronts.

The city’s theatre management company — Northbrook-based KemperSports — recommended that the in-depth theatre analysis leave out the basement, citing additional safety concerns.

“It’s a risk,” said John Erickson, Kemper’s regional operations manager.

“It’s like a whole other world down there,” added Rotering before leading the group down a steep, narrow and damp staircase hidden under a nondescript stage door.

Down below, the original Central Avenue marquee rests along a dark wall, a few feet safe from the nearest basement puddle. the old dressing room’s wood floor has rotted away and a second staircase, which formerly provided a quick route up to the live performing stage, is now blocked.

a $3 million project

In total, the maintenance and safety improvements needed to bring the theatre back up to city standards is estimated to cost more than $3 million, according to a facility assessment report conducted in July 2008.

The three-year-old report states that $843,000 is needed to address code violations and safety hazards, while an additional $2.66 million is required for necessary construction work aimed at tackling maintenance issues.

According to the findings, asbestos and mold damage needs to be rid of throughout; structural concrete needs restoration, the steel foundation needs reinforcement; the site’s drainage needs improvement; and the electrical, heating and cooling systems need to be replaced.

The document also details the seating, stage and balcony deficiencies. the good news is the city’s Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessment report — conducted after the council voted to purchase the theatre, but before the transaction closed — “revealed no recognized environmental conditions.”

The other piece of the puzzle is the financial attention the city has given to the theatre. According to the city’s 2011 budget, the theatre is expected to bring in $557,250 this year, from ticket sales, food and beverage receipts, retail leasing and marketing fees. on July 11, however, total revenue stood at $186,062, far below the seven-month pace to reach the budgeted amount. So far this year, the city has spent $194,939 of $534,013 worth of planned expenditures on the theatre.

the city lost $7,058 on the theatre in 2010, according to the budget, but Rotering added that the figure does not include city staff members’ time spent overseeing the venue. Deputy City Manager Patrick Brennan works with Kemper overseeing operations and Bob McCraren, the city’s superintendent of facilities, handles weekly maintenance needs.

The city has not provided the Highland Park News or Mayor Rotering with the full, adjusted cost.

Going forward, Rotering explained that the Highland Park Theatre’s litany of age-related needs is no different than the demands on vintage community theatres nationwide.

“The issue is limited resources, emotional ties to past days of glory in these movie theaters and real costs of maintaining them or restoring them,” said Rotering, noting one difference remains the fact that taxpayers own Highland Park’s movie house.

Still, Rotering hopes the right investor or arts company steps up to keep the venue a theater or live performing arts center. She won’t, however, approve additional city funds to finance upkeep and operations.

“I wouldn’t support spending that kind of money,” Rotering said, “but my understanding from talking to people in the community is that there is a very strong interest in restoring the theatre. So we will see what comes from our (request-for-proposal) process.”

Council back at work

on Monday, Council members were back at the worktable detailing the document interested developers will draw on before submitting proposals. the council previously expressed openness to all ideas, preferring the existing theatre use but also a willingness to entertain proposals of a dramatic shift to a hotel, retail or mixed-use residential complex.

Sweetening the development odds is the fact that the theatre site also offers additional prime space above the main floor as well as two large parking lots next door. Above the outdoor marquee sits a perfect setting for a dance or rehearsal studio, Rotering envisioned. two retail storefronts flank the theatre entrance, and office space is plentiful.

“The outside of the building is beautiful,” she said. “It’s absolutely beautiful.”

After recently visiting Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom, Rotering sent a picture of her dream Highland Park Theatre scenario featuring a large, live performing stage in front of a capacity crowd.

not a project for the city

“It’s just a really old building that needs some tender love and care, but by the same token the city is not the entity to put taxpayer dollars into restoring an old theatre,” Rotering said. “The goal is to see who’s interested and see what they want to achieve here. Lots of community theaters have gone in new directions; we just need to find the person with the means to achieve the goal.”

Similar to the dichotomy between the theatre’s remarkable potential and exhausting physical drawbacks, Rotering’s view of the ongoing process is split between past and future.

“The whole story to me isn’t just what are we going to do, it’s how on earth did we get to this place and how was that decision made,” Rotering said. “I never understood why the city bought the movie theater. I never understood why it was so difficult to get information about the financials, and I never understood why Kemper Golf Management was put in charge of the Highland Park Theatre when they had no experience in running movie theaters.

“There is just so much about all of this that has never made sense to me and I am really looking forward to moving forward.”

Ricky Barnes gets clubs stolen during charity golf tournament – Devil Ball Golf – Golf Blog – Yahoo! Sports

For all your golf news, follow Devil Ball on Twitter and Facebook.

The point of charity is to give things to people in need, but normally, you know the people you’re giving to. Not so much the case with PGA Tour star Ricky Barnes, who was playing in the Middle Market Open National Kidney Foundation golf tournament on Wednesday and had his watch and golf clubs stolen from his rental car.

Barnes, who finished runner-up at the 2009 U.S. Open and is still searching for that first win on the PGA Tour, finished his round, dropped his golf clubs off in his rental car, and returned just 30 minutes later to find all those items missing in action.

The painful price tag of such a theft? $11,500. most of that was because his Breitling for Bentley watch cost around $8,000, and while Barnes has banked $869,463 this season alone, it’s the pain of grooving your golf clubs that will be the biggest headache to Ricky.

An LPGA friend of mine had her golf clubs lost by an airline last season, and while the cost isn’t the problem, it’s having your wedges grinded just the way you want them, or finding that 3-wood that lies exactly how you want it. Golfers are neurotic in general, so to have to go out with a whole new set of golf clubs normally isn’t good for the psyche (but don’t tell that to Brittany Lincicome … two weeks after losing her golf clubs she’s two shots off the lead at the Women’s British Open after the first round).

What did Barnes have to say about the whole thing? the University of Arizona standout kept his sense of humor about it, of course, telling reporters, "Yeah, it was a good season — with the clubs I used to have."

Barnes is competing this week at the Greenbrier Classic, and so far isn’t having much success with his replacement set.
