The nine-year official course record was broken at Diamondback Golf Club Saturday with a little help from mom.

Playing in the men’s Open Division of the Texas Golf Association’s West Texas Amateur, Michael Culin of Plano, a sophomore business major at the University of California-Berkeley and a member of the Golden Bears golf team, fired an 8-under-par 63. he edged the previous mark of 64 that has been tied on numerous occasions but set originally in 2003.

Culin, who began his round off the 10th tee, was 7 under with one hole to play. after smashing a drive down the middle of the fairway, he found his ball resting in a sandy divot.

“That was extremely frustrating,” said Culin. “I knew I needed a birdie and when I saw that I was very anxious,”

Culin’s mother, who has been his caddie throughout the tournament, came through with the inspiration that delivered him.

“My mom kept telling me to stop worrying and that I was still going to birdie the hole,” he said.

Culin stuck an iron shot 15 yards from the flag about pin high and dropped the putt dead center of the cup.

“We were walking up the last fairway saying I was going to make birdie over and over again,” said Culin.

Having seemingly spoken things into existence, Culin’s closing stroke that secured the record also provided him with his personal best career round and propelled him into contention heading into today’s final round. he is five off the pace in a tie for 11th.

Mike Calef of Allen leads the

men’s Open Division by a stroke over Trevor McInroe of Plano. Calef posted rounds of 67 and 68 for a 7 under 135 two-day total. Defending champion Beau Davis is nine shots back after a second-round 74.

Tim Carlton of Cypress (68-66—134) leads the men’s Senior flight by a shot over Phil Austin of Arlington. Mike Gooden of Dallas (72-72—144) is the outright leader of the Super Senior group.

In a tournament that has seen a hole-in-one drop and watched a course record fall, a highlight of the event since the first wave teed off Thursday morning has been the ever-accommodating, legendary Charles Coody.

Respected locally and nationally, the 1971 Master’s champion who played his college golf at TCU is more than happy to host the tournament for a second time in the links’ near 13-year history.

“This is one of the longest standing tournaments in the state, and we’re glad to have it here,” said Coody, who owns and designed Diamondback. “The players are complimentary of the golf course, and this is great for Abilene, so hopefully they’ll go home and tell their friends there’s a pretty good golf course out here,”

Coody, clad in casual golf attire, drove his cart around the course watching groups putt out on the ninth and 18th holes. he stopped near the range watching competitors young and old hit practice balls and then walk to their cars, glancing always in his direction with an appreciative nod and silent high regard.

“We have a full field of players this year,” said Coody, commenting on the event filling its maximum number of competitors (144). “And we’re happy to have them all,”

As evidenced by the crowded range and clubhouse, packed scorer’s tents and practice greens and a parking lot that seemingly never yields a vacant spot, they were all happy to be there.
