A recent Demo Day at my local Roger Dunn Golf Shop was billed as the “biggest of the year” so I had to check it out.

Of course, I couldn’t resist seeing the latest clubs with a promise like that. These events are usually an exercise in patience for me since most manufacturers “forget” to bring left-handed clubs with them. not today! Nearly everyone had lefties to try out and most had women’s lefty clubs as well. It was a great time for lefties and I even ran into three other fellow southpaws while I was there. although I am a woman, I hit men’s regular flex clubs because women’s clubs are too short and “flimsy” feeling for me. even so, I asked everyone if they had women’s lefty. Here’s the rundown on what I tried out and who had what:

Adams Golf – This manufacturer had a full set of men’s and women’s hybrid Idea irons and women’s Insight XTD in left-handed driver to try out. I personally gave the 4 iron a few swats and liked it just fine. I’ve not hit this type of iron before so I’m probably not used to it. They had no men’s lefty driver to try so I had to take my husband’s word for it. He tried tha men’s XTD Pro driver that has the discussion boards aflame with the recent price drop. I’m guessing he thoroughly enjoyed it since he promptly ordered one for himself.

Mizuno – This tent was quite busy when I stopped by so I didn’t get a chance to try anything out. They did have men’s lefty irons and CLK Fli – Hi hybrids in a few different sizes. There was no lefty women’s clubs at all.

Tour Edge – This tent had no lefty clubs at all but told me they were “on order”.

Taylor made – I tried the men’s lefty CGB R7 irons here with a regular flex graphite shaft and liked them fine even though my personal preference is for steel shafts. the reps informed me that they would no longer be making a women’s lefty club but would have senior flex clubs. the challenge for women with senior flex is they can be a bit stiffer than the women’s flex and are a bit longer as well.

Cleveland – I hit the HiBore 8 iron and it was just adequate in my opinion. There is probably nothing wrong with the club, its likely just not for me. Cleveland also had no women’s lefty clubs to try. the rep was really quite helpful though and gave us a free sleeve of Srixon balls for watching the demonstration of their new bag. in a nutshell, it has technology that counts the clubs in your bag so that if you drive off and leave one at the green it will beep at you. the bag sells for about $300. I do really like Cleveland overall have a few of their woods now.

Cobra – as always, I can count on Cobra to have a good amount of lefties to try out. in addition, they have full sets of women’s lefty irons, hybrids, and drivers. I personally tried the S9 irons in men’s regular flex and found them to feel nice.

Nike – I can’t tell you how excited I was with Nike because of what they had. Granted, a limited women’s lefty selection but they had a lefty wedge to try out! I’ve never been able to try a wedge at a demo day. It was the 60° and I hit it like absolute crap, but it was nice to have the option! I probably hit it so badly due to my giddiness and excitement. the rep handed me a men’s Sumo hybrid and said I’d love it. He was right. you have to hit this club. in addition, the rep shared with me that Nike’s top priority was to get more involved with women in golf this year. Apparently they realized that they are missing something and are working to change that. Bravo!

Callaway – My irons today are the Callaway X18 men’s regular flex with the steel shaft and I really like them. I decided to hit the X20 in both the steel and graphite. what is interesting is that I used to only want the graphite but not anymore. the X20 steel were awesome. I am now itching to trade up very soon. This booth had a few men’s lefty options but no women’s.

Ping – I thought I was totally in love with the aforementioned Callaway until I hit the Ping G10. Wow. each time I hit the ball it was straight and had distance. These clubs must be really forgiving because I am one that always hits best when I first pick up a club and then as time passes my swing gets lazy. Hitting these at the end of the day and not missing a one means they just might be the right one for me. They also had a decent selection of women’s clubs to try out.

Titleist was gone by the time we got to the event. Apparently our local rep is also a bartender and had to leave early. maybe next time.

Overall, this event had the most left-handed clubs I’ve seen in a while. That along with the fact that I ran into other lefties that were asking for clubs means that manufacturers may stop “ignoring” us yet! My advice – keep asking reps for them when you see a demo and we will likely see more.

He is a beginner. his current golf bag is junky. He would def appreciate an upgrade, but I dont know which one to get?I like the second one the best. Is this a good bag?

Taylormade Acquires Adams: {An Alternative Perspective}

(Written by: GolfSpy T) It’s been a week since TaylorMade announced it had reached an agreement to purchase Adams Golf for $70 million. In the week that’s past the overwhelming majority of feedback, both here and on other noteworthy golf sites, has been negative. What we’ve observed is that most golfers…at least those commenting, fear the acquisition of Adams effectively means the end of the little golf company that so many love. While I certainly understand the doom and gloom mentality, I’m not convinced it’s time to close the book on Adams just yet. like most of you, however; I do wonder what the future holds.

Last Monday we speculated that TaylorMade-Adidas is purchasing Adams simply because they believe that, with the right backing and better marketing, Adams – with its knack for innovation, and likely stockpile of intellectual property could pose a serious threat to the TaylorMade Empire. While I absolutely believe there is truth in that assessment, I don’t realistically expect that anyone at TaylorMade is going to go on record and say “we bought Adams so no one else would”.

The lack of such an admission isn’t disingenuity, it’s just good business sense. That type of statement isn’t going to be made in any industry over any acquisition, and if it actually happened here, I would have applauded the honesty, and then told you that TaylorMade had just made a huge mistake. Regardless of how you might feel about the brand and its equipment, at TaylorMade these days, actual mistakes are very few and very far between.

So if you’re willing to accept that TaylorMade isn’t simply buying Adams simply to prevent someone else from doing it, then why is the biggest name in golf purchasing a much smaller golf company with a relatively modest bottom line?

Here’s what TaylorMade CEO, mark King gives as a reason:

Adams Golf is complementary to TMaG, fits TMaG’s focus on innovation and product performance, and is a valuable brand extension that adidas believes it can grow substantially. Adams Golf is a small golf brand relative to others – with sales under $100 million – but it brings strengths in important growth areas that TMaG’s existing brands have not penetrated well. For example, Adams Golf has a strong focus on women’s and senior’s clubs. to that end, Adams Golf has been very successful with hybrid-iron sets and packaged full sets, products that TaylorMade has not typically offered. the acquisition of Adams Golf will allow adidas to further operate a multi-brand strategy and maximize the footprint of the Adams Golf brand.

One thing I need to be reminded of frequently is that MyGolfSpy readers, and readers of other golf sites and forums represent only a small portion of the golfing population. While you might think of Adams as a powerhouse innovator of woods (both drivers and fairways), the absolute leader in hybrids, and the producer of some damn fine irons for the low to mid handicap market, I’d venture that the larger golfing population as a whole sees them exactly as TaylorMade appears to; a quality producer of clubs for high-handicappers, women, and old men.

It doesn’t really matter who you claim as your target demographic, the pyramid of influence within the golf business still has (and will likely always have) the tour pro on top. While smarter golfers know that what Dustin Johnson plays should have little bearing on what the average golfer puts in his bag, the tour pro, and more specifically the PGA Tour Pro still has the greatest influence on where the average golfer spends his money.

The top of Adams’s pyramid has the likes of Tom Watson, Kenny Perry, and Yani Tseng. It’s top full-time PGA Tour ambassador…take your pick. is it Ryan Moore or Aaron Baddeley? either way, it’s not hard to figure out where the perceptions of Adams as a brand for seniors and women come from (even if, pound for pound, Yani Tseng is the best golfer on the planet today). Contrast that with TaylorMade whose stable of PGA Pros includes Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Justin Rose, Jason Day, and current World #1 Luke Donald (driver and fairway wood), and you can start to understand why TaylorMade might view Adams as a complimentary, and not necessarily a competitive brand.

What happens next boils down to how TaylorMade sees itself, and how TaylorMade sees Adams Golf. on a conference call last Monday, TaylorMade CEO, mark King explained how TaylorMade-Adidas views the two brands:

For us, it [Adams] really compliments TaylorMade as a brand. we see ourselves for serious golfers. we talk about the voice of our company is directly at the zero to four handicap player. we definitely sell products to higher handicap players, but definitely we focus on the top of the pyramid. Adams Golf definitely is positioned for game improvement, with a real focus on seniors and ladies, which is two categories that we don’t compete very well in. So we think the combination of our brand TaylorMade at the top of the pyramid, and the Adams brand in the middle to high handicapper really allows us to compete at all segments of the golfer.

If you’re like me, you might grumble a bit at the notion that TaylorMade, as a brand, is focused on low handicap golfers. my immediate reaction was that it’s impossible to get to #1 by focusing on the smallest segment of the golfing population (true low handicap golfers). And when you look at specific equipment examples like the RocketBallz fairway woods and irons, there is a case to be made that the bulk of TaylorMade’s marketing is for the masses. But once again I’m reminded that MyGolfSpy, and the other golf sites only reach a small portion of the golfing public, and that larger golfing public probably doesn’t see things like we do.

While we digest and dissect every ad we see, the average golfing consumer (including many low-handicap golfers) sees only Tour Pros, and very likely still believes that the secret to becoming a better golfer is as simple as buying what the best golfers in the world have in their bags. While you and I might very well find the notion ridiculous, allowing for marketing that’s simply a cut above, by focusing on better golfers, not only does TaylorMade sell to them, they sell to the guys who want to be them. It’s not simply about selling equipment…it’s just as much about selling the dream.

Everything that’s been stated publicly suggest that Adams Golf is going to remain in business as an affiliate of TaylorMade Golf (and that’s the key phrase in all of this), and will continue to operate their business out of Plano, Texas. While TaylorMade has given some strong indications of how it plans to leverage the brand, we’ll likely be able to infer a great deal more about the actual path of Adams once Chip Brewer’s replacement is named.

If it shakes out like representatives of TaylorMade have told me it will, what we’re going to see are two separate though not necessarily incomplete product lines. It’s apparent that Adams Golf will be responsible for producing clubs for the demographics mark King mentioned specifically; women, seniors, and high-handicappers. this would include hybrid-iron, and pre-package sets.

You can also bet that TaylorMade is going to make a huge push with the Adams brand internationally. While international sales account for more than 60% of TaylorMade’s business, Adams does roughly 10% of its business internationally. this is an area that offers a tremendous growth opportunity for the Adams brand, and one I expect TaylorMade will make every reasonable effort to capitalize on. my suspicion is this is where the greatest marketing push will be made.

TaylorMade will remain focused on developing clubs for better players. And while some don’t agree, it’s reasonable to assume, based on market position, the largest percentage of the golfing population already believes TaylorMade produces, in most categories, a better product for a better player. Don’t expect any dramatic changes.

You and I…we’re not in that average population. For us, the lines between TaylorMade and Adams aren’t so cut and dry. And if you’re like me, the whys of the acquisition and all the quotes that go with it are just filler. What I really want to know…and what I think you really want to know is what happens to the product lines where the current Adams products could be seen as direct competitors to the current TaylorMade products (drivers, fairway woods, hybrids, and better player irons like the MB2 and CB3). our review samples of the CB3 irons arrived earlier this week, and there is part of me that dreads the possibility they could be the last sets of Adams “player’s” irons that ever get produced.

So I asked TaylorMade specifically; what about those product lines that compete directly with TaylorMade? Here’s what I was told:

Adams will run its business operations as a stand-alone affiliate…their better players lines will continue.

So I double-checked. the answer was the same…although perhaps I should have asked for how long. if there’s any concern that Adams products might cut in to the TMaG bottom line, nobody is willing to let on. And logically, it shouldn’t really matter. when TaylorMade sells well, TaylorMade wins. if Adams sells well, TaylorMade still wins. this is the new reality.

It’s a little less cut and dry whether or not some of those Adams innovations will bleed into the TaylorMade lineup, but TMaG isn’t ruling anything out.

My suspicion is that over time we’ll see some additional Adams influence in TaylorMade fairway woods, and hopefully TaylorMade irons as well. we may even see some TaylorMade influence in Adams products (would an Adams driver with improved adjustability be a bad thing?). While it’s easy to view this as a case of Goliath conquering David, and bemoan the loss of competition in the marketplace, I’m not going to get wrapped in any of that. There’s no point.

In talking with golfers over the last week, what I’ve come to realize is that the majority of the golfing population isn’t aware that TaylorMade has purchased Adams, and when they find out, most don’t, and most won’t care. A multitude of things could change in the next 3 years, but regardless of the outcome, I expect the average golfer to remain indifferent or at worst, ambivalent.

Maybe the Adams brand will sink faster than a Sergio Garcia’s golf ball at Doral. Regardless of what’s being said publicly, it could still happen. But maybe…just maybe…the integration of Adams into the TaylorMade family will go exactly as TaylorMade says is planned. the Adams brand continues to innovate, grow (particularly internationally), and produce the woods, hybrids, and irons so many of us here are fond of. And while it might sound crazy now, maybe, just maybe…with a little help from Adams, TaylorMade might actually produce a players iron that the relative few of us here might actually get excited about.

I’m not ruling anything out.
