Toy Box notes: Els uses new Callaway utility
August 23, 2012 by admin

Although Callaway Golf officials have said on several occasions that the X Utility Prototype is designed for touring pros and will not be sold to consumers, the pendulum may be swinging in the other direction.
Ernie Els carried three of the clubs in the Open Championship.
“I told Roger (Cleveland) he should make a whole set,” joked Els, who carried the only three lofts that are made – 18, 21 and 24 degrees. This left Els in an unusual situation: a 5-iron was the longest iron in his bag.
A utility club looks a lot like a beefed-up iron and is sometimes called a utility iron. Generally the utilities have small, hollow heads with a wide sole. a hybrid, on the other hand, is slightly larger and looks more like a small fairway wood.
Because of high demand for the X Utility, Callaway shipped every available head to England for the Open. Cleveland, who designed the new club, was on site at Royal Lytham and personally bent the three utilities (one-half degree flat) used by Els.
Graeme McDowell, who tied for fifth, had an 18-degree X Utility in his bag.
Els carries all Callaway: besides the utility clubs, Els’ all-Callaway bag included Razr Fit driver (8.5 degree, 45 inches), X-Tour 08 3-wood (15 degree), Razr X Muscleback irons (5-PW), Jaws wedges (52 and 60 degree) and an Odyssey White Hot XG no. 1 Belly (44.5 inches, 71.5-degree lie angle, 3 degrees of loft). He played a Callaway Hex Black Tour ball.
Top finishers use KBS shafts: Els used the 130-gram KBS Tour X-flex steel shaft in his irons, wedges and utilities. Amateurs might pay attention to this strategy. In particular, matching the shafts in irons and hybrids/utilities is gaining a measure of acceptance among skilled players.
Adam Scott, runner-up in the Open, played the same KBS Tour X-flex shaft in his Titleist irons.
The KBS Tour shaft is designed for a rhythmic swing, while the KBS C-Taper is earmarked for a faster tempo. a Tour 90 shaft, intended primarily for amateurs, is available as well.
Fujikura shaft in Els’ driver: Fujikura also played an important role for Els. His driver shaft was the Fujikura Motore Speeder VC 7.2.
Els used the Speeder 757 for years before switching to the VC version. The new model is a high-kick, mid-to-low launch, low-spin shaft. It also was played at the Open Championship by Padraig Harrington, Jim Furyk and Francesco Molinari.
The purple shaft used by Els should not be confused with the white Motore Speeder VC.2 Tour Spec driver shaft used by Louis Oosthuizen, Steve Stricker and Rory McIlroy. This is the lowest-launching, lowest-spinning shaft in the Motore Speeder line.
Short shots: Scott Stallings won the PGA Tour’s true South Classic with a Mitsubishi Kuro Kage 70 X-flex in his Titleist 909D3 driver (8.5 degree) and Diamana White Board 83 X-flex in his Titleist 909F2 3-wood (13.5 degree). It was the first victory on the PGA Tour for the new Kuro Kage. . . . 126 of 156 players in the Open Championship used true Temper shafts in their iron sets. . . . Aldila won the wood shaft and hybrid shaft manufacturer counts at the Open Championship and has captured both counts at 30 of 32 PGA Tour events this year. . . . At the true South Classic, 12 new Titleist 913 drivers were in play. . . . On the eve of the Open Championship, Tiger Woods went to fresh grooves in one club, his Nike VR Pro 60-degree wedge.
By the numbers Here are the equipment category leaders from the Open Championship:

The TaylorMade R11 Fairway Wood brings new technology, innovation, and aesthetics to the proud line of TaylorMade clubs. The new R11 Fairway Wood features fully adjustable lie and loft, adjustable face angle and movable weight technology makes this the most adjustable driver in golf. a highly adjustable club like the R11 makes it easy to tune your fairway wood to your specific needs. you can shop online and search for cheap golf equipment for sale in many online shops of discounts and promotions to save some bucks on your R11 Fairways.
The R11 fairway wood uses a ‘Flight Control Technology’ (FCT) hosel, letting each golfer adjust the loft of their club, up or down. This changes the launch angle that the ball leaves the face of the club. TaylorMade’s ‘Adjustable Sole Plate’ (ASP) technology sits on the base of the club and can be used to adjust the face angle into a neutral, open or closed setting, for even greater distance. using these two amazing technologies of the TaylorMade R11 Fairway Wood allows every golfer up to 60 yards of side-to-side trajectory change on your shots. Meaning each and every golfer, no matter what your standard can set the club up perfectly for their game.
It is still not a good choice for the beginner or for the high handicap golfer, but if you can consistently shoot in the mid-80s or lower, then this club might be the right one for you. Now Titleist 910 D2 Driveris on sale at discount golf clubs shop.

TaylorMade RocketBallz Irons: TaylorMade introduces the new 2012 TaylorMade RocketBallZ Irons for 2012.The new 2012 TaylorMade RocketBallZ Irons is made for the mid to high-handicap golfers who want more distance and forgiveness so that they can hit it farther and still have a good control on the ball flight. from the 3-iron to the lob wedge, these new irons have earned their name. Engineered with metalwood construction and fast-flexing faces. Attack from anywhere with maximum ball speed and pinpoint accuracy. Get distance so extreme it’s laughable.
TaylorMade RocketBallz Fairway Wood :there was already a line at the TaylorMade tent for those waiting to swing the heavily advertised new RocketBallz woods, so I kept going. The TaylorMade RocketBallz Fairway Wood has been developed with some key aims. TaylorMade wanted to create a fairway wood which had a durable yet flexible sole and face with a deeper face design and a low COG so it interact well with the turf. The RocketBallz Fairway Wood head also features some small striking green colour accents to make your club look as good in the bag as it does at address.
Buyingcheap golf offer wide ranges of golf clubs sets and discount golf clubs for golfers to enjoy. 2012 top new TaylorMade RocketBazz Series are available. TaylorMade RocketBallz Rescue, Fairway Wood, Irons, Driver. enjoy these new golf clubs sets with the cheapest price at Buyingcheapgolf.
TaylorMade Golf, today introduced RocketBallz irons, a progressive and dynamic set engineered to deliver effortless distance and a higher and straighter ball flight. This winning combination of distance and accuracy makes the new RBZ iron a game-changer and positions to be one of the greatest iron sets in company history.
The RBZ irons progressive head shape offers hollow long irons, cavity back middle irons, while the short irons and wedges are a smaller and more compact clubhead design. In fact, the short irons hardly appear game improvement-like at all. The entire set is visually appealing and easy to hit. from address, the topline looks a little heavy, but you really hardly notice it. The color combination is unique which features a dull steel finish with black cavity and neon green accents. I’ve heard grumblings about the color combination, however I like the neon green, and besides, the green is not visible at address and has no visual affect on playability.
Features:Thin, fast-flexing face and the COR up to the USGA limit, promotes high ball speed and long distance.Re-engineered face structure with Toe-Bar located at the upper-toe area controls face-flexion to direct shots straightforward for improved accuracy.new vibration and sound control system specially designed for thin-faced irons promotes exceptional feel and sound.ATV soles in Attack, Sand and Lob wedges promote remarkable versatility allowing you to play six key scoring zone shots.Every clubhead is individually engineered to promote the optimum combination of launch angle, ball speed and spin-rate.
TaylorMade touts the RBZ Max as “our longest iron ever” and it has the advanced engineering to back it up. each iron is individually designed with a two-piece metalwood-inspired construction. The thickness of the faces depends on the iron, with a thicker face for the pitching wedge and a thinner one for the 6 iron. The thinnest face belongs to the 4 iron.more details at buyingcheapgolf.com/goods-287-TaylorMade-RocketBallz-Fairway-Wood.htmlbuyingcheapgolf.com/goods-283-TaylorMade-RocketBallz-Irons-.html
As face thickness decreases, its speed increases. Speed is enhanced with the efficient energy transfer created by the tungsten sole weighting, which lowers and centers the CG. The head is draw-biased to promote swing speeds. Add up these speed enhancements and you get incredible distance unmatched by any other TaylorMade irons. The RBZ Max is also the easiest to hit and draw of all the TaylorMade irons.
Callaway Hyper X Driver reduces bad effects normally experienced from off-centre shots.

COMMUNITY JOURNALISM: Golf tip

Editor’s note: Steve Charters is in his 10th year as a pro at Twin Pines Golf course. Born and raised in Cedar Rapids, Charters competed at Central College in Pella and has been a pro for 17 years in Dubuque and Cedar Rapids.
While I can’t believe it’s August already and back to school sales are in full swing, it’s never too late to look at upgrading your equipment.
One upgrade in equipment that has taken off in the last seven or eight years is the switch from a traditional long iron to a club called a hybrid.
Hybrids have been around in some form or another for the last 15 to 20 years, but have really become a big hit in the last seven or eight. so why such a surge in hybrids over long irons? the answer is simple.
A hybrid has more of a fairway wood looking head with a shaft the length of whatever long iron you’re replacing.
The biggest reason they’ve gained favor over long irons is that the shape of the head allows the weight inside the head to be moved from the face of the club, back to the lower rear of the club. This allows for higher launching shots that land softer, thus allowing a better opportunity to hold a green from further away. the design of the head also allows for a larger sweet spot on the club which will help the shots that miss the center of the face go farther than they would with a traditional long iron.
In a nut shell, a hybrid will give you more forgiveness and higher softer shots into greens which will help you have a better ability to hold those greens that you may have struggled to hold before with the less forgiving, lower shots hit by your long irons.

How to hit a fairway wood
August 14, 2012 by admin

“I’m hitting the woods just great, but I’m having a terrible time getting out of them.” – Harry Toscano
Post written by Ian Hardie
I see a lot of golfers who – due to the advances in club technology – are able to hit really good drives off the tee.
The balls they hit with their driver seem to fly high, long and remarkably straight.
Maybe it’s the clubs or possibly it’s because the ball is teed up and simple enough to hit cleanly
It could be due to them spending hours – hitting drive after drive off the nice tees at the driving range.
In fact most of them hit it so well, you would almost think that they were all scratch golfers
And then they get to a fairway wood shot………
All of a sudden, their true ability shows up and the results are generally poor (at best)
Poor fairway wood shots cost a lot of golfers the opportunity to attack on par 5’s
A well struck fairway wood allows you to play your 2nd shot deep on a par 5, giving you the ability to attack with your 3rd
Most golfers aren’t able to attack as they are busy trying to save the hole after a poor fairway wood shot that’s topped along the ground, headed off into the trees, the rough or a water hazard.
So why such a difference?
I think to understand why most golfers struggle to hit fairway woods, we need to look at why they can hit their drivers relatively well first.
When using a modern driver most players have;
- the ball teed up quite high
- practice tees at driving ranges that are the same height (consistency)
- a tendency to hit more drivers than any other club if they do practice
- the faces of most drivers are pretty deep these days, which gives a lot of room for error and miss-hits, while still providing a good shot
- the ball positioned at the front of their stance to promote hitting it on their upswing
There’s not much that can go wrong – is there?
The ball is teed up nice, nothing in the way of a club head, plenty of room to hit it hard on the upswing and a club head designed to produce a good shot however you hit it.
However, when hitting a fairway wood – the tables are turned a bit;
- for a start there’s no tee holding it up off the ground
- fairway woods generally have a smaller head and face, so the margin for error is significantly smaller than a driver
- the ground conditions can affect the shot quality greatly depending on where you are hitting from, whether you catch it cleanly and the weather on the day
- most golfers simply don’t practice that much with them
Basically, the margin for error is much smaller for a fairway wood shot as the ball is on the ground and you don’t have as much help from the club head
Also for some reason, most golfers are under the impression that a fairway wood shot is more of a sweeping shot like a driver but it’s not.
So how do you hit them?
The main thing to be aware of is that you need to adjust the ball position – so that it is back in your stance an inch or two from where you hit your driver to allow you to make a descending blow on the ball (as opposed to ascending with a driver)
Suddenly realized why you top your fairway wood shots after reading that?
Read it again just to make sure you have it
Put the ball back in your stance a little and make a descending blow on the ball, just the same as you would hitting a long iron.
The other thing you may find helpful is that if using a fairway wood off a tee instead of a driver – hit it off the ground the same as you would on the fairway.
Yes, I am suggesting not to tee it up!
Personally I hit all fairway woods off the ground whether I am on the tee or not – which means I develop one consistent action regardless of where I am playing it from – I make no adjustment from tee shot to fairway shots at all.
After all – regardless of our levels – we all want to be consistent right?
I also do the same with every iron shot but we’ll deal with that another day.

This product did great. Great speedy 2.0 3 wood, i’ve never had a great deal luck with fairway woods but this club has modified the game for me. a lot of the par fives i’ve had to lay up in the past; with this club I can go for it and get there; most of the time.recommend this club to everyone shopping a fairway wood. I’m very satisfied with this cobra golf club s3 max 24 7 wood senior graphite to say the least. Used it first time out this season- getting used to the feel- head feels a little light- but the ball jumps off the club face – do no longer have to swing hard – club came from carls golfland with headcover in just a few days- top notch price. I love this cobra and will continue to purchase it.
most who saw the car crash photos are surprised that the automobile is that damaged in the front. Because woods changed into going less than 33 mph, which is why airbags were not deployed, the damage changed into expected to be minor. But the photos reveal more massive damage, so the remarkable debate on what woods could be hiding continues. Cobra golf club s3 max 24 7 wood senior graphite was as advertised and acquired in a timely manner. the car crash pictures simplest add to suspicions that woods and wife elin nordegren were struggling with beforehand. this is an mind-blowing cobra golf club s3 max 24 7 wood senior graphite price for the price.
