These are a small part of my 40 years of collecting. there will be a total of 5 wood shaft clubs in the group. Clubs are from the1920s. all are right handed. there is a 1 iron, 2 iron, 4 iron, mashie & Niblick. They are different models & lengths, not a matched set. A History of Golf Clubs

The origins of golf clubs can be traced back to 1826 where club maker Robert Forgan of Scotland used American hickory wood to manufacturer shafts. Hickory was soon adopted as the wood of choice despite cheaper alternatives available.

1848 saw the conception of the Guttie golf balls which saw traditional long nose golf clubs become obsolete. a new generation of golf club was required to cope with the increased stress associated with this new type of golf ball. these clubs best resemble the modern set of woods in today’s game of golf.

In the early nineteenth century, golfers associated Scotland with quality golf equipment in the same way that we associate fine chocolate being produced in Belgium and Switzerland – at this time golf equipment production in Scotland was considered to be an extremely profitable and worthy business.

At the start of twentieth century, America had started to manufacturer and export golf clubs in large volumes, whilst replacing outdated materials such as hickory, with hard woods such as beech – the new choice for golf club heads. a growing demand for hand-forged metal club heads had also arrived at this time – in 1902, the first groove-faced irons appeared and offered an increased amount of backspin, compared to wooden heads.

Despite an initially slow take-up, steel shafts had been experimented with since the late nineteenth century. Steel shafts became legalised in 1929, after the Prince of Wales was spotted using a set of steel shafted golf clubs at St. Andrews. as popularity grew for the steel shafted golf club – the US Open was the first major tournament to feature this new type of golf club.

Antique Vintage Hickory Wood Shaft Smooth Jacques London Lofter Player Vintage and Classic Golf Clubs for Sale

This auction is for a right handed 38″ hickory shafted lofter. marked FIFE Jacques London on the back along with a large L. The L is for lofter and not Ladies. a substantial 1890′s vintage lofted iron. 44* loft and a nice heavy D8 swingweight. Great for Oakhurst and other Gutty ball hickory events. The smooth faced head is clean and not all rusted or dinged up or pitted. has the expected minor bag dings. The old hickory shaft is either original or was re-set years ago. it is straight, is without cracks and I can make it move slightly at the hosel if I out a lot of pressure on the head. The grip is a very interesting Bussey type sewn leather wrap with whipping top and bottom and it is in surprisingly good condition. if you are playing at the Mid Pines hickory tournament in two weeks I will be happy to bring this club with me and save the shipping expense. recently I have been experiencing problems with breakage and loss during shipment so my shipping cost includes insurance. Shipping in the US is $13 for this item. This item shipped either Priority Mail or UPS ground-my choice. I do combine items for shipping for $2 to $3 per additional club depending on location and value. Hickory Wood Shaft Era Golf Sand Tee Bakelite Rare Vintage Old Antique Unusual Vintage and Classic Golf Clubs for Sale

Rarely seen on E-bay, vintage Keystone sand tee molder, circa 1920. Just scoop up some moist sand, pack it in the lower part, push the button and out comes a perfect tee everytime. Or so says the ad for this golf aid. These are made from an early plastic called bakelite. The problem with it is, it ‘s brittle and will chip or break if dropped on a hard surface. so if these did survive, they often have chips. this one is in great condition, no cracks or chips. marked on the top “Keystone Mfg. Co. / Chicago”. It has a spring plunger that works like new. It is a redish, burgundy color, and 1 3/8 inches tall. Ship to USA only. please e-mail with any questions. Check out my other items!
