Bobby Valentine Wimps out on Criticizing Josh Beckett

May 17, 2012 by

You remember Bobby Valentine, don’t you?

He was the brash, outspoken manager hired by the Boston Red Sox to replace Terry Francona, who won two World Series but apparently had lost the clubhouse.

Valentine might not have any World Series victories in his resume, but he was going to change the country club atmosphere in the Red Sox clubhouse and lay down the law.

No more chicken and beer.

No more inmates running the asylum.

And whether you like his style or not, Valentine lived up to his reputation when he made a calculated comment about Kevin Youkilis in mid-April, saying the Red Sox third-baseman was not “physically or emotionally into the game as he has been in the past…”

No one had ever questioned Youkilis’ commitment or passion before; he was the last person that anyone figured Valentine would criticize.

Youkilis said he was confused, and Dustin Pedroia, speaking for his teammates, questioned Valentine’s motives, adding, “that’s really not the way we go about our stuff here. I’m sure he’ll figure that out soon.”

Apparently Valentine got the message. he apologized about his remarks, and then Youkilis went on the disabled list where he remains.

And the tail is wagging the dog again in Boston.

Bobby Valentine questioned Kevin Youkilis’ commitment. Brian Kersey/Getty Images

That’s because the manager has defended Josh Beckett, the supposed ace of the staff who missed a start because of an injury and was out golfing the next day.

Bobby V. said he didn’t know of any players who got injured playing golf.

Maybe not, but he might want to ask Tiger Woods and other PGA pros whether you can suffer knee, back and shoulder injuries playing golf.

Red Sox management has played deaf, dumb and blind to Beckett’s ill-advised off-day venture to the golf course.

Beckett, who was shelled in his next start did not apologize or explain why he decided to play golf when he was too injured to pitch.

“I spend my off-days the way I want to spend them. My off-day is my off-day,” Beckett defiantly told the media in a post-game interview.

Beckett makes around $17 million a year, and the Red Sox are saddled with him for three more years.

He was the ringleader of the beer-and-chicken controversy in which he and other Red Sox starters such as John Lester were eating fried chicken and drinking beer during games in the clubhouse.

This is the equivalent of Nero fiddling while Rome burned because the Red Sox collapsed last September and Beckett was unable to play the role of stopper.

It cost Francona his job and all he did was win two World Series and end the Curse of the Bambino.

The September collapse has led to a 2012 hangover. The hole the Red Sox are digging isn’t too deep yet.

Things should improve when Youkilis and Jacoby Ellsbury return from the DL.

There’s always the hope that Carl Crawford might be available during the second half of the year.

But you have to wonder about the pitching staff and what is going on between Beckett’s ears.

Ownership and the front office have failed to scold Beckett for playing golf when he was too injured to pitch; Valentine has gone out of his way to defend him.

They might as well put chicken and beer back on the clubhouse menu.

The Red Sox will have to make the playoffs despite themselves.

2011 for the Callaway Company is a harvest year, and I believe the company will keep going to product more and more the superior golf in 2012. We all know that Callaway is a leading golf company in the world. it has produced many golf equipments. among them, I love the Callaway X-22 Irons mostly. I also think that the iron is still the best on on the market. the release of the iron, it is not the harvest of the company, but the havest of the golfers. Many golfers improved their game by using the callaway x22. if you used the iron, I believe that you will love the iron. more importantly, you may enjoy playing golf with the iron. why do I think so? In the following, I will tell you the reason. I think that the iron has a advanced desgn. We can see the details.

The x22 irons continues to enhance the reputation of the X series as the market leader in game improving, forgiving irons. the moment of inertia is 10% higher than in previous models thanks to enhanced perimeter waiting to allow for added forgiveness on off centre hits. the clubhead is slightly thinner on top and on the sole which not only makes the X-22 great to look at but also helps improve forgiveness. as with all the X-Series, the callaway x22 irons has the perfect centre of gravity to encourage the best possible ball flight to help improve your shot making and your handicap. In a word, I like the iron very much. You can have a try.

Now French, who has lived in Forest City since 1970 and has beenskiing for 30 of those years, visits the town’s newly establishedand groomed trails regularly.

“It’s amazing and greatly appreciated,” French said. “The trailsare equal to what you can get somewhere else.”

After experimenting with cross country skiing trails and providingintermittent grooming from borrowed equipment last year, ForestCity Outdoor Recreation Committee volunteer Jeff Hovinga has helpedto establish the town’s own skiing reputation with the purchase ofa snowmobile, groomer and roller.

“The trails are official this year,” Hovinga said. “We have beensurprised by how many people like skiing.”

The committee was given a Hanson Family Foundation Grant in thesummer of 2011 to help purchase the equipment.

“I know Jeff put in a lot of time. It’s through his efforts,”French said. “People should appreciate what we have now.”

Residents of Forest City have taken advantage of the trails, but sohave out-of-towners, Hovinga said.

“It’s a way to not only grow the community, but also bring otherpeople in,” he said. “One person from Omaha, Neb., came to ForestCity last winter when he heard there was a new trail and he stayedovernight.”

The trails are groomed to allow both classic cross country skiingand skate skiing, which is a faster method and looks likerollerblading. the trails are open at all times and are free to thepublic.

Ian McDowell, recently recognised by the Institute of Hospitality in its ‘Aspiring Managers Awards’, has been appointed as General Manager of Redbourn Golf Club.

The 31-year-old – who was honoured at a gala presentation at the four Seasons Hotel, Park Lane, to acknowledge the individual achievements of ambitious managers in the leisure and hospitality industry – plans to build upon Redbourn’s reputation as a golf club where everyone from beginners and families to experienced golfers can enjoy the sport.

Ian joins the club from Hoebridge Golf Centre, Woking, – both facilities are part of Burhill Golf & Leisure the UK’s leading golf course owner and operator – where he excelled as the first person appointed to the group’s Manager in Training (MiT) programme.

Of his new role Ian said: “I’m extremely excited about the job, it has come around a lot quicker than I was expecting but for the last few years I’ve felt I was able to take on a General Manager’s role. It has been one of my goals to manage a golf club and now I’m here it has made the last 10 years of hard work worthwhile.

“Redbourn has a solid membership base and a real family friendly atmosphere with everything to offer the club golfer but also those starting out in golf. we have great facilities – driving range, Par-3 Kinsbourne Course, 18-hole Ver Course and a relaxed bar/restaurant area – to take someone from absolute beginner through to established golfer.”

Ian took his first steps in golf when he took on a summer job at South Herefordshire Golf Club while he was studying Sports Psychology at the University of Glamorgan. “I soon realised that the golf environment was somewhere I enjoyed being and wanted to work in.”

Upon leaving university Ian began working at Sapey Golf Club, Worcestershire, before moving to London after accepting a role at Hampton Court Palace Golf Club. in 2006 Ian was approached by the the Wisley, Surrey, where he worked his way up to Sales and Marking Executive during fives years there.

Little over a year ago Ian was appointed to the MiT role at Hoebridge Golf Centre under the guidance of Senior General Manager Mike O’Connell, where he studied the day-to-day operations of the business.

“My experience until then had been predominantly in golf operations as well as sales and marketing, but being at Hoebridge gave me an overall picture of the business and the work involved in running a multi-million pound facility,” added Ian. “You have to learn very quickly as it’s non-stop, the MiT programme allowed me to experience management but have that safety net of great people around me to help.

“I now aim to bring all that I have learnt through the MiT programme to Redbourn, and look forward to welcoming both members and visitors to the club.”

Tiger Woods on top at Australian Open

December 5, 2011 by

Tiger Woods topped the leaderboard for the first time in nearly a year today after he shot 5-under-par 67 in the second round of the Australian Open.

Woods ran off a string of impressive shots in Sydney, the best a 3-wood from 280 yards into a 15-mph wind on the par-5 eighth hole, setting up a two-putt birdie. he stood at 9-under and took a one-shot lead over Peter O’Malley (66).

Jason Day, playing alongside Woods, birdied the last hole to shoot 68, leaving him two strokes back.

This is the first time Woods has led after a round since the third round of the Chevron World Challenge in December 2010. It’s also the first time he has led after a round in a full-field event since his last victory, two years ago this week in the Australian Masters.

“I really played well,” Woods said. “Even though I shot 5-under, it felt like it could have been 8 or 9 deep.”

Said Robert Allenby, who played with Woods and Day: “Tiger’s on his way back, that’s for sure. I think where he is right now is good enough to win.”

Daly in hot water: John Daly hit seven balls into the water on the 11th hole and stormed off the course in Thursday’s opening round in Sydney. Already with a tarnished reputation Down under, he might have gone too far with Australia’s golf hierarchy.

Daly was banned from playing in the Australian PGA in two weeks.

“It’s very disappointing for the tournament … that he has treated the championship this way,” said Trevor Herden, Golf Australia’s director of tournaments. “It is a bit of a habit.”

Daly was 7-over-par through 10 holes after becoming upset on No. 10, where he mistakenly hit a practice ball out of a bunker, believing it was his tee shot. The two-shot penalty and subsequent three-putt gave him a triple bogey.

Inkster leads: Hall of Famer Juli Inkster shot a bogey-free, 5-under 67 to share the first-round lead with Suzann Pettersen in the Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Inkster, 51, is trying to become the oldest winner in LPGA Tour history. Beth Daniel was 46 when she won the 2003 Canadian Women’s Open.

Briefly: Phil Mickelson was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame. Mickelson, 41, received 72 percent of votes cast on the PGA Tour ballot. … Woods signed a golf-bag endorsement deal with Fuse Science, Inc., a Florida-based sports nutrition company.
